Pictures & Photos of Croatia & The Croatian Islands

Croatia has the best coastline on the Adriatic, In the south the coast is backed by the grey rocky Dalmatian mountains that rise steeply out of the sea, Sandwiched between the mountains and the sea are beautiful old cities whose history can be traced back to Ancient Greece. The importance of the Croatian coast can be seen in the number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites it has. Split was built by Emperor Diolcetian as his retirement Palace and the old town still has his mausoleum building as well as many important Roman remains. Further south is the wonderfully well preserved medieval town of Trogir and in the far south is the jewel of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik. There are many more treasures along this coast and lying offshore are a multitude of islands to explore. The popularity of Croatia as a tourist destination is growing all the time but it is still possible though to get away from the crowds and find peaceful places on the Islands.

Dubrovnik is called the Jewel of the Mediterranean with good reason. It was the most intact Medieval city in Europe until it was bombarded during the balkan war. The extensive damage has now been repaired and the cruise liners once again moor in its harbour. A visit to Dubrovnik has to be at the top of any visitor to Croatia's list.

Pictures & Photos of Diocletian's Palace, Split, Croatia

If Emperor Diocletian had not decided to persecute the early Christians late in his reign, history would have focussed on the great work he did in trying to stabilise the Roman Empire. He reformed taxes and the bureaucracy of the Empire and devised a new system of accession to the Purple of Emperor. He first split the Empire in two and created a Co-Emperor. He then elected his successors, the Caesars, and once they had got the hang of power he retired to his Palace at Split to grow cabbages. Diocletian's Palace is not so much of a palace as a small town and many Roman ruins still remain. His retirement did not last long as he had to come out of retirement to stop his successors squabbling. After his death his whole plan fell apart and Constantine became sole Emperor.
